You mightn't give it much thought when you eat them, but most snacks have a rich history behind their success and why they're so deliciously good. If you've ever wondered where Tim Tams biscuits are from and why the treat was named as it is, read on to find out.
What are Tim Tams?
Tim Tams are one of Australia's most popular cookies. In Australia, they're called "biscuits", although not as the US knows biscuits.
The Tim Tam consists of two malted biscuits separated by a light hard chocolate cream filling and coated in a thin layer of textured chocolate.
Made by an Australian company called Arnott's, they're one of their most iconic product offerings.
The Origin Story of Tim Tams
The story of how Tim Tams came to be is quite interesting. Alan Morrow and Ian Norris created the biscuits in 1963 and then released them to the market in 1964.
The two came up with Tim Tams after going around the world looking for ways to improve their products back home. The two drew inspiration for the new product from Britain's Penguin cookies, and they sought to craft a better version of it.
But that's only half of the story. The actual origin of Tim Tams goes as far back as 1827, which is when Arnott's proprietor was born.
The History of Arnott’s Biscuits
Originally from Scotland, William Arnott moved to Australia with his brother David after an apprenticeship stint in which he learned his baking and confectionary skills.
However, the duo didn't immediately start baking once they arrived in Australia. The lure of quick riches from the gold rush wasn't easy to shrug off. After failing to strike gold, William Arnott retrained his sights on what brought him to the land down under in the first place.
As fate would have it, William's new venture paid off, and as he quickly discovered his "gold mine," he began innovating ways to improve his product. Although plain compared to today's Tim Tams, the market was sold entirely to it.
Arnott's grew in the following years, and with increasing interest in the product, its market reach went beyond Newcastle and into Sydney.
William Arnott retired from the company's operations in 1899 and passed on shortly after. Fortunately, he taught his family the business' trade secret, effectively laying a firm foundation for a company that would produce the world-renowned Tim Tams.
Today, Tim Tams remains a famous brand in Australia and around the world. Thanks to its creative marketing strategies and delicious cookies, this amazing product isn't just a delicacy but also forms part of the Australian identity.
Where Did The Name Tim Tam Come From?
The famous product got its name from Ross Arnott, who named the treat after the winning horse at the Kentucky Derby in 1958.
